The working group will be meeting early on April 21 (not April 14th as incorrectly stated in the e-newsletter) to accommodate our lunch at Blue Gator on US 41 by the Withlacoochee River—at 11 a.m. You can join us there or come to the Dunnellon Public Library at noon for the business portion of the meeting.
Environmental worries have not disappeared or even diminished since the passing of Amendment One. Whitey Markle moderated The Tri-County Working Group discussion that took place on March 17 at Crystal River Preserve State Park to begin to address some of these worries.
A big area of concern is the sale of “surplus” land by the Southwest Florida Water Management District Some of these lands are important ones in Citrus and Marion County. Of primary concern is Annutteliga Hammock which extends into Hernando County. It is well over 1000 acres of conservation land that is needed for aquifer recharge and wildlife habitat. Halpata Tastanaki Preserve in Marion County could lose 47 critical acres that are part of the scrub jay habitat and located next to a subdivision.
Therefore as many members of the Tri-County Working Group that can possibly make it will be attending the District Headquarters meeting on April 2 at 6 p.m. Program your GPS to find it at 2379 Broad Street in Brooksville. Join us!
A big 4-story hotel is planned in Homosassa Springs that has raised red flags for many members in that community. Citrus county land use plans would have to be altered for this facility to be approved. It abuts conservation land and is in an important area to be protected. The meeting for interested folks to attend is at the County Courthouse in Inverness on April 14 at 5 p.m. Please attend if you can!
