FROM THE CHAIR: ANOTHER BUSY MONTH
By Maryvonne Devensky
From the Chair
One of the reasons I volunteered to be chair is that I thought we needed more communication between the State Sierra Club and our group, so you can read the last part of this article, notes taken during the meeting on October 3rd in St Petersburg. They are not perfect but can give you an idea of the reports shared at that meeting. If you would like to attend the next meeting, on December 5, in Lakeland, let me know. To keep informed on Sierra Club at the State level, please go to www.FloridaSierraClubNews.org and subscribe.
Another reason I volunteered to be chair was to focus on water issues, and I want to invite you to the next general meeting, Thursday, November 5th, when Tom Morris will show us photos of the cave systems he has explored. We will also show a section of the film about the cave/sink in Alachua that belongs to the National Speleological Society, whose goal is to protect that cave from possible development in downtown Alachua. Remember that the SSJ Excom has supported this Society with a donation in July 2015.
Focusing on water, we will participate in the outings sponsored by the Florida Defenders of the Environment on the Ocklawaha river during 3 days, November 19 to 21. Please go to the website of FDE to register on that outing: click on enewsletter for September 2015, and go down to article on the drawdown of the river at Rodman Reservoir, to register.
Last, our Tri County group has worked on a powerpoint presentation: “Water Works†that can be shown to any civic group, Homeowners Association. If you are interested in having a presentation for your group, please contact Jon Brainard, at email@example.com. Many, many thanks to Kathryn Taubert for her work on this power point….and Kathryn is running to be a member of our Excom for 2016-1017, so please send in your votes.
This is a reminder that we are all volunteers and that the two issues of water and energy are priorities for the Florida Sierra Club, so we need anyone willing to help out with our Excom.
The first thing you can do is vote for Excom and send in your ballot before December 3rd.
The other thing is volunteer to table at events (we had tables at the Santa Fe Sustainability Day and UN Day this month), so contact Sherry Steiner at firstname.lastname@example.org). If you do not like to go out and staff a table, but prefer to work on the computer, please contact Roberta Gastmeyer, email@example.com, you can help her with our membership list.
I also recently attended the statewide Sierra Club meeting in St Petersburg, click here to see my complete notes.
