Concerts to benefit Withlacoochee Area Residents


The Withlacoochee Area Residents (W.A.R.) was organized in 1984 in response to threats to the quality of life because of limerock mining operations. In the coming weeks, the there will be a series of concerts to benefit the effort to defeat the proposed Tarmac mine.

On Saturday, June 18th, from 7 pm to 9pm at the Yankeetown/Inglis Woman’s club, Whitey Markle and the Swamprooters and Steve Wallace will entertain. Whitey has been writing and performing songs for over 30 years in a style that’s a mixture of bluegrass, folk, and country. Steve Wallace calls himself a cracker and his original songs are salty and entertaining.

On Saturday, June 25th, from 7pm to 9pm at the Yanketown/Inglis Woman’s Club, Frank Thomas and Starbird will be featured. Frank Thomas is a native Floridian and has written over 500 songs about Florida. He has toured with the Arkansas Travelers. Starbird (Valinda McQueen and Jay Wood) is a singer/songwriter team from Eustis that performs songs in folk, mountain, and blues styles.
