The Florida Constitution says, ” It shall be the policy of the state to conserve and protect its natural resources and scenic beauty. Adequate provision shall be made by law for the abatement of air and water pollution and of excessive and unnecessary noise and for the conservation and protection of natural resources.” (Art. II, Sec. 7)
In 2010 Whitey Markle together with other members of Quiet Lakes battled to have an amendment added to the Florida Constitution to ensure that residents living on the shores of a lake would not be harassed by noise from airboats between the hours of 7:00AM and 7:00PM. For more information, check the website Quiet Lakes of Alachua County. In the winter of 2012 Republican State Senator Steve Oelrich attempted to weaken this amendment. In response, the Alachua County Commission sent a letter to the legislative delegation opposing this move. You can find a copy of this letter at the link. The effort by Senator Oelrich failed and we still have quiet lakes.
